Changes in each version

What is new, what changed and what we fixed in each version of the beta. Each version also says if it works with older versions.

When a version does not work with older ones

Update every computer where you use Nearfield. Tell your collaborators to update too. A share between two versions that do not work together can go wrong.

Your version is at the bottom of Settings in Nearfield. When a newer version is out, Nearfield tells you in the Inbox and in Settings. Download it from the download page, and install it the same way as the first time. Your projects, records and settings stay as they are.

The versions

  • 0.1.0-beta.9Show a collaborator what you mean with a sample or a voice note. Play a mix to anyone with a listen link. Works with beta.8.
  • 0.1.0-beta.8Finish a shared project with one button, and make a complete folder. Works with beta.7.
  • 0.1.0-beta.7Masters reach every collaborator. A moved project folder keeps syncing. Update every computer.
  • 0.1.0-beta.5Shares show how far they have come. Many fixes from the first testers. Update every computer.
  • 0.1.0-beta.3The first version for testers.

0.1.0-beta.9

Published 26 October 2026.

Update every computer and tell your collaborators to update.

Beta.9 works with beta.8 and beta.7 in a shared project. Tasks given to you, the note when sharing stops, and the clock fixes need every person on beta.9. On beta.8, a note or task shows its words, but not its sample or voice note. A collaborator on beta.8 sees a listener's notes like other notes, but cannot make a listen link. If you take back a sample you sent, a collaborator on beta.8 sees that you use a newer Nearfield. Beta.5 or older still does not work well with beta.9: a computer on beta.5 can put an older master back over a newer one.

New

  • Samples and voice notes on notes: want a different snare? Drop it right on the note. No WeTransfer link, no text explaining where it goes. A sample can be up to 50 MB (WAV, AIFF, FLAC or MP3), and a voice note up to 3 minutes. It goes in the other person’s library only when they press Add to my library, and taking it back removes nothing from their computer. How to send one.
  • Listen links: send a mix to anyone, even if they don’t have Nearfield. Their notes land at the exact second, not “somewhere in the second chorus”. A link on your master plays each new master you export, and you choose if the listener can download it. How to make a listen link.
  • Desktop notifications: a pop-up tells you when a project or a task arrives. No more waiting for a “sent it” text. Choose which ones.
  • Tasks for you: a task given to you is marked “You”, so it doesn’t get lost in the group chat. How tasks work.
  • Contacts from sharing: whoever shared a project with you is already in your Contacts, ready for a task. A person you removed stays out until you connect with them again. Who is in your Contacts.
  • Sharing-stopped notice: if a collaborator stops sharing a project, your Inbox tells you, and your copy stays put. After a finish, you can ask them to share again. When sharing stops.
  • Add a collaborator from Share: bring someone in right from the Share screen. No shared folder to set up, no invites to chase. Each person there shows how far the share has come. How to share a project.
  • Progress bars: long jobs show how far along they are, so you’re not left staring at a spinner.
  • Shorten sample paths: its own screen now, so the Fix screen is shorter. Open it from Fix, under More ways to fix. How to shorten sample paths.
  • Clock check: if this computer’s clock is wrong by more than 5 minutes, the Inbox says so, before times in Nearfield go wrong. The Inbox.
  • The list of missing plugins and samples on the project page has the glass look, like the other menus.

Fixed

  • When two computers' clocks did not agree, a Finish answer or a hand-over could be lost, and an older edit could win. Now the real order counts, between computers on beta.9.
  • The project page could say that plugins were missing while Show plugins listed none. The count is now checked against the plugins on this computer when the page opens.
  • Shared folders between a Mac and a Windows computer could stop, and the computers kept disconnecting. Nearfield now keeps one connection to each computer.
  • Send tracks could fail on a Set that was saved over, or that had a new return track.
  • A second press on a task's Send or Save, or a second Enter in a note box, could write the same thing twice. Each now waits for the first.
  • On a Mac, Start Nearfield when I log in did nothing at the next login when Nearfield ran from the download window. Now it asks you to move Nearfield to Applications first.

0.1.0-beta.8

Published 25 October 2026.

Update every computer and tell your collaborators to update.

Beta.8 works with beta.7 in a shared project. To finish a project, every person needs beta.8. Beta.5 or older still does not work well with beta.8: a computer on beta.5 can put an older master back over a newer one.

New

  • Finish: when a shared project is done, open its Share page and press Finish. Any person on the project can press it. Each other person gets a note in the Inbox with Confirm and Not yet.
  • When everyone confirms, Nearfield checks that every person has the same final Set and its samples. Then sharing stops. Nothing is removed on any computer.
  • Not yet waits 7 days, then the Inbox asks again. A person can say not yet three times. If nobody answers, the project finishes by itself after 14 days, and each person keeps their copy.
  • The newest save becomes the final version. The person who pressed Finish sees every newer save first, and can choose another one. If the final version is on one computer only, the card offers to send it to everyone first.
  • When it is finished, the project moves to Finished on the board of the person who pressed. Everyone else's Inbox offers Move to Finished, so nobody else's board changes by itself.
  • Make a complete folder: when a project is finished, Nearfield can make one new folder with the final Set, its samples and its Max for Live devices. You choose where. Live opens it without Nearfield. Plug-ins do not go in the folder.
  • Nearfield never changes your project to make a complete folder, and it never removes the folder.
  • A finished project has Reopen on its card. If you started the project and save it after the finish, the Inbox asks “Share <project> again with <name>?”. Nothing goes until you share again.
  • A new top for the project page: one card with the buttons on the right, Open in Live first, and a bar for each person you share with.
  • On the board, Finished and Abandoned come up at the bottom of the window while you drag a card. They are also in the … menu of each card.
  • A received project keeps a small “Shared by <name>” label on its card after you file it.

Fixed

  • On a computer with little free memory, a received Set that had fully arrived could show “This Set is still arriving on this computer”. Now Nearfield reads the Set in small parts.
  • In the Inbox, Play the new master now changes to Pause the new master while it plays, and the row shows how far it has played. Before, a second press took the play control off the row.
  • The Report a bug button now has the same text size as the tabs at the top.
  • Open in Live on an older version now names the copy after that version's own Set. Before, the copy could have the name of another Set in the project.
  • While Contacts is open, Nearfield no longer runs a full sharing check every 10 seconds when nothing has changed.
  • Plug-ins in a folder set in Live's own Plug-Ins settings showed as missing on the project page. Nearfield now reads the folders Live uses, and checks each project again by itself.
  • A share could stay at “5 MB of 1.6 GB” for ever, because it counted samples that are never sent. It now counts only what a share sends, and a received project gets the newest rule for what it sends back.
  • The Dashboard warned that a person's sync looked stuck whenever one of their computers was off. Now it names a person only when none of their computers has connected for 3 days. Contacts folds an old computer row.

0.1.0-beta.7

Published 23 October 2026.

Update every computer and tell your collaborators to update.

Beta.7 does not work well with beta.5 or older in a shared project. A computer on beta.5 can put an older master back over a newer one, again and again. A new master from a computer on beta.5 reaches you only if you still need samples from that project.

New

  • When a collaborator exports a new master, it now goes to every person in the shared project. Before, it went only to a person who still needed samples.
  • The Inbox tells you when a collaborator's new master arrives: “<name> put a new master on <project>”. Play it from the row, or press Dismiss.
  • If you rename or move a shared project folder, Nearfield finds it and keeps it in sync. First it checks that every file is in the new place. The Inbox says “<project> moved, and syncing with <name> continues”.
  • If Nearfield cannot follow a moved folder, the Inbox says why in one short line. Nothing is sent from the folder until then, so your collaborator loses nothing. The row has buttons: Look again, Show folder, and Use this folder when Nearfield found more than one copy.
  • When sharing is off, a received project and the project page say so, with a Turn sharing on button. A paused share in the Inbox has its own Resume button.
  • Sign out on the Account screen signs out this computer only. Nothing is removed, and your projects and shares stay. To come back, sign in again with the same email.
  • A Report a bug button is in the bottom-right corner of the main screens. The tray menu and the Mac menu bar have it too. It opens Report a problem, where you say what happened.
  • If the folder where Nearfield keeps its records is missing, Nearfield says so when it starts. Put the folder back from the Recycle Bin, or press Start again as a new computer.
  • When Nearfield can, the same card offers Bring back this computer. Your computer then keeps its identity and its keys. Sign in again after it. Notes, history and the list of shared projects in the removed folder do not come back.
  • If a collaborator uses a newer Nearfield, the Inbox says “<name> uses a newer Nearfield. Update to keep sharing everything.” Nearfield keeps their records as they are.

Changed

  • If you delete a master on your computer, it does not come back from your collaborator. Your collaborator keeps their copy.
  • A received project says when sharing is off. Before, it said “Checking what has arrived…” for as long as the app ran.
  • A person with no name on this computer shows as “Someone”. Before, some rows showed an internal code in place of the name.
  • The Windows installer closes a Nearfield or Syncthing that was left running before it installs. It asks you first.
  • A collaborator's new master now leaves their computer within about 30 seconds. Before, it could wait up to ten minutes.
  • If you move your whole library and choose it again, Nearfield now follows all its shared folders. Before, only the project folders kept syncing. If a folder cannot follow yet, Nearfield tries again by itself.
  • When sharing is paused, a share on its way says so, with a Resume button. Before, it still said “Arriving”.
  • A person with two computers shows once in the share list and in “Who can see this”. The name you chose for this computer is kept.
  • The Inbox reads its list again each time you open it. A new master shows at once.
  • A project page that takes a long time to open now says so, with Try again.
  • After a restart, the check for samples that your collaborator holds under another name is faster.
  • Nearfield never removes a file on a network drive. Each place where it can remove a file now checks this first.
  • Only one copy of Nearfield can open a library at a time. If you start Nearfield again while it is open, the open window comes to the front.
  • If your library is on a network drive, Nearfield says once that a folder on this computer works best. It still uses the folder.
  • The folder step refuses Live's User Library, a folder inside another library and a folder inside a records folder. It says what the folder is and what to choose.
  • If you moved Live's User Library, Nearfield no longer copies samples to its old place. It names the folder and sends you to Folders.
  • Buttons that open a window no longer end with “…”. For example: Delete my account, Delete note, Remove column and Move. Words that show work in progress, such as “Signing out…”, keep them.

Fixed

  • Open in Live now finds Ableton Live when it is installed in a folder of your choice on Windows.
  • A master that arrives damaged is fetched again. If it still fails after 20 minutes, the Inbox tells you.
  • A master now arrives even while a safety stop holds the Set back, for example a missing plug-in.
  • If Turn sharing on fails, Nearfield now says so. Before, nothing happened.
  • If one sharing step hangs, the other steps now try again after a few minutes. Before, they could wait for a long time.
  • On a Mac, Finder shows the real version of Nearfield. Before, it showed 0.0.0.
  • If you move a shared project folder by copy and then delete, Nearfield checks the new place against its last full list. If a file there is different, it does not follow, and the Inbox says why.
  • If a project has no Live Set at its top level and a received Set waits, Share now puts it in the project first. Before, the share button did nothing.
  • On a Mac, Open in Live now finds Ableton Live outside the Applications folder.
  • On a Mac, the first play of a new master is now recorded.
  • On a Mac, a quit from outside the app now writes its line in the app log. Before, the log looked like a crash.
  • The Inbox row “Nearfield has not finished an update to its own records” now goes by itself after a force quit. Before, it stayed.
  • A sign-in link opened while you are offline now shows a page that says what to do. The same link works when you are online again.
  • If you quit before you wrote down the 12 recovery words, Nearfield now opens the Account screen at the next start. There you finish the step.
  • Two clicks on Nearfield at the same moment now start one app, not two.
  • If you press Make this the main version twice at the same time, the second press now changes nothing and says so. Before, the project could end with no main Set.
  • If you press Keep mine on one screen and Put it in the project on another, only the first press counts. The second one says why. Before, your collaborator could be told something that was not true.
  • Two presses of Just share or Repair at the same time no longer leave an extra copy of the Set in your project folder.

0.1.0-beta.5

Published 18 October 2026.

Update every computer and tell your collaborators to update.

A computer on beta.3 that has never paired may not get a connect request. It also takes a new share only after you restart Nearfield. On beta.3, a new account cannot make its recovery code.

New

  • A share shows how far it has come, on both computers. For example, “Arriving: 3 MB of 1.6 GB” on the receiver, and “Sending to <name>” on the project page of the sender.
  • A received project counts as new only when all of it has arrived.
  • Settings, Folders shows “Where Nearfield keeps its records”. Press Move… to move them to another folder. Nearfield copies them and checks each file. It never deletes the old copy.
  • If the recovery step of a new account fails, the Inbox says “Your account is not finished”. Press Finish now to do it.
  • If a person does not accept your invite for an hour, the Inbox says “Waiting for <name> to accept”.

Changed

  • The Inbox, the Dashboard and the list of arrivals now update by themselves. You do not have to reload a screen.
  • If you open Nearfield while it already runs, it shows the open window. It does not start a second copy.
  • If the open copy does not answer, Nearfield asks before it closes it: “Nearfield is already running but is not answering.”
  • On Windows, Nearfield refuses a library folder that is typed without its drive letter. It also refuses the top folder of a drive.
  • Nearfield no longer makes an empty “Sync” folder in your home folder.

Fixed

  • A new account can now make its 12-word recovery code. In beta.3 this step failed.
  • On Windows, Quit in the tray menu now quits Nearfield.
  • A share sent to you now arrives while Nearfield runs. Before, it waited until you restarted the app.
  • A connect request now reaches a computer that has never paired before.
  • On a Mac, Nearfield now brings its own list of trusted certificates. Before, sign-in and the update check could fail on some Macs.
  • A folder with [ ] in its name now shows its Sets.
  • A file name from a Mac that Windows cannot use no longer stops a share. Nearfield gives the file a safe name on Windows.
  • A short pause in the sharing service no longer restarts it. Before, a restart stopped the files that were on their way.
  • “Active now” stays on while a collaborator has Nearfield open.
  • When the app says it will try again every hour, it now waits an hour.

0.1.0-beta.3

Published 17 October 2026.

The first version for testers.

There is no older version for it to work with.

The first beta for Mac and Windows. Read your library, fix missing samples, keep your projects in order, and share a project with a collaborator. The home page shows what Nearfield does.

What an update means for your work

  • An update never changes your Ableton Sets.
  • Nearfield never edits a Set. A fix is always a new copy beside yours.
  • Problems we already know about are on the known problems page.
